2019-2020 Free and Reduced Information

Wilkes County Schools Child Nutrition would like to welcome your student to the 2019-2020 school year.  Wilkes County Schools Elementary and Middle Schools participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), part of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  This program provided a free reimbursable breakfast and lunch each day a student is in attendance. Our high schools do not participate in this program; however, they do participate in the traditional free and reduced program where eligibility of free or reduced meal service is determined through Direct Certification or by application each school year.

Direct certification is the process under which Local Education Agency’s (LEA) certify children who are members of households receiving assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Cash Assistance (formerly TANF) or FDPIR as eligible for free school meals, without further application, based on information provided by the State/local agency administering those programs.  The Child Nutrition Office will complete this process and notify eligible students by letter through the US postal service. Should you participate in one of the programs listed above and have not received a notification letter please contact the Child Nutrition Office at 336-651-4007.

Applications will be available early August at each High School, Wilkes County Schools Central Services, or the Child Nutrition Office.  Eligibility starts once the application is processed and benefit eligibility is not retroactive.

Applications may be returned to the Child Nutrition Manager at each of the high schools, or may be mailed to:

Students who received meal benefits in the 2018-2019 school year from one of the following categories may have up to a 30-day grace period from the first day of school to determine eligibility for the 2019-2020 school year.

  1. A Wilkes County CEP School (The Student must have been enrolled on May 30, 2019).
  2. Direct Certification
  3. 2018-2019 Approved Application

The 30-day grace period ends October 8, 2019 for traditional high schools, Wilkes Early College 30 day grace period ends September 24, 2019.  This difference is due to the different school start dates.  Should eligibility of benefits be determined through direct certification or application prior to the 30 days the eligibility approval or denial is effective immediately at application processing. Students not meeting the eligibility guidelines for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program will be required to pay for meal services.

Wilkes County schools participates in the lunch pre-payment system.  This system gives 24-hour access to student meal accounts where you can make payments, view purchases, and monitor balances.  Please visit the Wilkes County Schools Child Nutrition Website for a link to access the lunch pre-payment system and additional child nutrition information or call 336-651-4007.

We appreciate your support and look forward to our opportunity to serve your student during the 2019-2020 school year.   Should you have any questions regarding meal benefits please contact Mr. Marty R. Johnson, Director of Child Nutrition at 336-651-4007.

Respectfully,

Marty R. Johnson, Director of Child Nutrition
